Voor zijn bijzondere bijdrage aan de martial arts en de weg van budo. Die bijdrage geldt voor Nederland, Europa en de wereld. Koen Scharrenberg is een pionier van de martial arts in Nederland. Hij diende de vechtsport meer dan vijftig jaar. Dat deed hij als kampioen, trainer, coach, bestuurder en ambassadeur.

Koen Scharrenberg is a pioneer of martial arts in the Netherlands. He served combat sports for more than fifty years. He did so as champion, instructor, coach, board member and ambassador.
Een loopbaan van vijf decennia
A career of five decades
Hij is een Nederlandse pionier van de martial arts en budo. In 1971 begon hij samen met zijn tweelingbroer Wim. Hij werd meerdere keren Nederlands en internationaal kampioen. Acht jaar lang zat hij in het Nederlandse team. Op het WK van 1979 haalde hij de laatste tien. Hij was de enige Nederlander, tussen 187 deelnemers uit 62 landen.
He is a Dutch pioneer of martial arts and budo. He started in 1971 with his twin brother Wim. He became a Dutch and international champion several times. For eight years he was in the Dutch national team. At the 1979 World Championship he reached the last ten. He was the only Dutchman, among 187 competitors from 62 countries.
Zijn weg staat voor discipline en moed. Na elke tegenslag kwam hij sterker terug. Van de mat in Tokyo tot het bestuur in Europa liet hij hetzelfde spoor na: toewijding, integriteit en inspiratie.
His path stands for discipline and courage. After every setback he came back stronger. From the mat in Tokyo to the boardroom in Europe he left the same trail: dedication, integrity and inspiration.
Hij diende de sport ook als bestuurder, op het hoogste niveau. Hij is vicevoorzitter van de WKO. Eerder was hij voorzitter van de Europese Karate Organisatie (EKO), met 45.000 leden in 32 landen. Daarnaast is hij ambassadeur van de martial arts en budo. In 2023 kreeg hij in Japan de 7e Dan.

Karate en budo horen niet bij het gradensysteem van GCSF. Dit ereteken is een persoonlijk eerbetoon van het bestuur. Het zegt niets over aansluiting, graad of bevoegdheid bij de federatie. Titels en dan-graden buiten het GCSF-systeem komen van de organisaties in de tabel.
